2021 Premier City Challenge

The 2021 Premier City Challenge is the successor to the Premier City Challenge, a challenge that requires contestants to visit each Premier-ranked city on the New World in the shortest possible time. Created by chiefbozx, the challenge is a successor to the 2020 edition and was reset due to the inclusions of Oparia and Redwood (along with changes in plugins and Fastboi technology).

The challenge is split into four classes with increasing difficulty. Class C allows all forms of transport, while Class S requires participants to complete the challenge in survival mode and while using limited transport methods.

The challenge is welcoming to players of all navigational ability and familiarity with the server. Novice challengers have found the challenge accessible with Class C taking 5-10 minutes to complete, while experienced members have found the two- to two-and-a-half-hour Class S challenge to be a worthwhile achievement.

The fastest time on the leaderboard in each class as of the beginning of the Infrastructure Staff Meeting on October 31, 2021 will receive a prize funded by Chief. The prizes are:

  • Class C: Winner $100, runner-up $50, third place $25
  • Class B: Winner $200, runner-up $100, third place $50
  • Class A: Winner $500, runner-up $250, third place $125
  • Class S: Winner $1,000, runner-up $500, third place $250

Anyone else submitting a valid run by the deadline will receive $10 for each class they participate in.

Everyone is allowed to submit for multiple classes and eligible to win a prize in each class.

Classes and restrictions

The four classes and their differing restrictions can be summarized in the following table.

Class C Class B Class A Class S
Foot
Pig
Fastboi (4th generation)
Wooden boat
Minecart
Flight (creative mode)
Elytra
Tridents
Warp rail
Warp ferries and waterbuses
Buses
Seaplanes
Helicopters and blimps
Planes
Dragons (Kessler only)
Rocket ships

In addition to the above, Class S requires the challenger to complete the challenge while in survival mode (the only items allowed are those from /kit race, which may be spawned at any time.) Classes A, B, and C all allow creative mode.

When running in Class A, B, or C, fireworks are allowed when using elytra so long as standard server rules are followed (meaning they cannot cause debilitating lag). If you're using an enchanted trident or fireworks, you must submit a video proof of your run and launch a firework in daylight conditions or show the enchantment tooltip on your trident.

When running in Class B or C, you are responsible for the cost of taking warps.

Meme classes

For those challengers wishing to try something harder than Class S, the following meme classes were designed to add further restrictions onto the challenge route. (For the purposes of prizes, all of these count as Class S runs, however the first person to complete a valid run in each of these will receive a $200 prize.)

  • Class S(E): Cities and towns below the Premier rank cannot be visited if they contain the letter E. (Transit facilities that use the letter E are allowed, so for example Wazamawazi Zoeteman Regional Airport is allowed.)
  • Class S(M), a.k.a. The Marathon: Transport on foot is the only allowed method. (Sprinting is fine.)
  • Class S(N), a.k.a. Nuzlocke Mode: only one Fastboi is allowed and you have to give it a name.

Common rules

The following rules apply regardless of which class of challenge is being attempted.

Objective: You must visit each Premier-ranked city on the New World at least once in the shortest time possible. You do not need to visit the Old World city of Arisa. The full list of cities is as follows (though it's up to you to determine the best order): Achowalogen Takachsin, Airchester, the City of Evella, Deadbush, Elecna Bay, Espil, Kenthurst, Kessler, Kolpino City, Laclede, Lanark, Larkspur, Oparia, Quiris, Redwood, Segville, Sunshine Coast, Utopia, Venceslo, and Whitechapel.

  1. You must use flight and walking speed 1.
  2. A city counts as visited once you are inside, within 10 blocks of (at street, platform, or concourse level), or standing on the roof of any one of the following buildings within the city (see "City-specific inclusions and exclusions", below, for details on if a specific building is included or excluded):
    1. An MRT station
    2. Any other transit building, including airports, warp rail stations, ferry terminals, and multi-modal transit hubs, though local bus stops do not count for this purpose.
    3. The town hall
  3. Speed and Jump Boost potions, or anything (besides beacons you happen to find along your route) that provides those effects, are not allowed.
  4. If you are attempting a challenge class that permits you to use warp-based transportation, you are responsible for the cost of taking those warps.
  5. Dynmap and the wiki may be used before and during your run. Other tools such as MRT RapidRoute may be used before and during your run, so long as they are publicly accessible.
  6. You may not receive assistance from any other players during your run (for example you may not ask someone to stand at a landmark location to make it easy for you to spot), though they may assist you in the planning process.
  7. You may not use staff powers, the /tpa command, homes, /spawn, or /mv tp. Using any of these requires you to start over.
  8. Dying at any time during your challenge requires you to start over.
  9. Start your stopwatch when you leave the last transportation facility within your starting city, and stop it when you arrive at the first transportation facility within the destination city. You may pause your stopwatch if you disconnect from the server, resuming it as soon as you resume movement or take a warp.
  10. If you disconnect from the server in a Class S run, you must switch back into survival before you resume running again.
  11. You may livestream or record your run. If you are using tridents or fireworks (not applicable in class S), you must record or livestream your run.
  12. Time penalties may be issued for violations of the rules. Skipping a town results in an invalidation of the challenge attempt.
  13. You may pass through any transport facility, even if it's not allowed by your run class. However, you can only use the modes available to your class. Examples:
    1. In Class A, you may fly over the ATC airport using an elytra, or you can take the MRT Plains Line through the airport. However, you cannot take any warp-based transit to or from the airport, since warp-based transit is not allowed in Class A.
    2. In Class B, you may take any warp train at the Segville International Airport, and you may pass through the airport on the A5. However, you cannot take any flights to or from the airport, since flights are not allowed in Class B.
  14. If you take a form of transport that passes through a station without stopping there, it does not count as visiting that station/city. In other words, the vehicle you're using to access a particular city must actually stop and allow passengers to board or disembark there.
  15. Travel is only allowed between the Old and New Worlds. Travel is not allowed to any other worlds, including the Space World.

City-specific inclusions and exclusions

Some cities have specific buildings that are included or excluded due to their location relative to the city center. If a transport facility is NOT listed here but can be reasonably considered to serve the appropriate city, it is allowed.

  • Achowalogen Takachsin: The allowed MRT stations are C15 through C18, and XE7 through XE20. The allowed warp rail stations are AT-West, AT-Suburb, and Solarion Downtown. All other transit stations are excluded, including ATC Airport, AT-Covina Downtown warp rail, Solarion Outer warp rail, the MRT Marina, and the MRT Marina Shuttle.
  • Kessler: The only allowed MRT station is T27. Dragon-based transport is permitted in Class C and treated as planes.
  • Lanark: Horizon National Airport, Horizon Junction Station, and Swale are excluded.
  • Quiris: There are no airports which are close enough to Quiris to be eligible.
  • Segville: The A5 that runs between the two terminals of Segville International counts as a part of the airport. Per Rule 13 above, so long as you don't take a disallowed form of transport through Segville International, you may pass through it in any run class.
  • Venceslo: STC Metro stations in Whiteley and Schillerton do not count. Riding on the A54 past Venceslo-Fifth Ward International Airport does count as visiting the airport (similar to Segville).
  • Whitechapel: Whitechapel Border Station is excluded, along with its associated Network South Central platforms. Additionally, while Whitechapel Sky Harbor is allowed at appropriate classes, passing by it on the A8 does not count as visiting Sky Harbor - you must go up to the terminal entrance to count it. (This is different from Segville and Venceslo because the A8 is sunken below the Whitechapel Sky Harbor terminal, while the A5/A54 is right next to the appropriate terminal entrances.)
