Auburn Academy is committed to ensuring that students' non-academic lives are as lively and engaging as their academic ones. A key aspect of the Academy's residential life model is an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. All buildings feature gender-neutral toilets and the Academy makes a concerted effort to ensure that its student body is diverse.

Student life for Preparatory School students at the Academy revolves around the four Houses: North, East, South, and West. Upon matriculation, students are placed in one of the Houses. Houses serve as a family and provide mentorship and camaraderie for students and many activities are based around friendly inter-House competition. The House that reigns victorious at the end of each academic year is celebrated at the closing ceremony and commencement.

A wide variety of cuisines are served at the Dining Hall and Academy staff will accommodate for any dietary restrictions. Breakfast is available from 6:00 am to 9:00 am, lunch from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, and dinner from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Students wanting snacks between meal times are invited to visit the Student Centre.

Outside of the academic day that runs Mondays through Fridays and the half-day on Saturdays, students are free to spend time with classmates, do homework, attend activities, and relax.

Each student is assigned to a room in their House's respective residence hall with one roommate and a private bathroom for each room. Residence halls have each two wings and three-storeys, forming six "modules". Each House has six student leaders: four prefects and two senior prefects, with one leader assigned to each module. Two head students are chosen each year and take the place of a senior prefect in their House. Student leadership is selected by a combination of faculty and staff nomination and student voting. Appointed students take on additional responsibilities of advising younger students, assisting in resolving conflicts, and helping with disciplinary matters in exchange for benefits such as access to a dedicated lounge in the Residential Life building and single rooms without a roommate.

Most Preparatory School students are expected to live on campus in the residence halls. Students who reside nearby (within thirty to forty-five minutes) may matriculate as day students without paying room and board (aid will be adjusted accordingly), but the full Auburnite experience is only gained through complete immersion in the campus culture.
