The District line is an Auburn Underground line serving many of the districts in the town of Auburn. This, along with London Underground's District line, gives the line its name.

History

The District line was conceptualised as an east-west connector linking Auburn's newly distinguished districts as the town expanded beyond the grounds of Auburn Academy. During conceptual development, the present-day Metropolitan line was at times considered part of the District line, with the western section known as the 'Peninsula branch' and the eastern as the 'Stadium branch'.

Construction on the line began with work on Bascule station in early 2023. Tunnelling proceeded eastward to the site of Observatory station where the station box was constructed with plans to integrate the station entrance and exit into a future building on the surface. The double station box of Roundabout station was then completed and the tracks and tunnels connecting it to Observatory station — including a junction and stubs for the Metropolitan — constructed shortly after. Surface structures, access shafts, and a large ticket hall for Roundabout station were then constructed. Shortly after, Airport station was also constructed alongside Auburn Airport, being the first surface-level station on the network.

In late 2023, the station box for Aviation station was constructed, but it remained unconnected to other stations. Tracks connecting Aviation station to Airport station were placed in January 2024. Future work will integrate an exit with a surface structure.
