Kantō University (KU) is a public research university located on a group of plateaus in the southern region of Kantō. It is the flagship educational institution for the city and is one of the largest on the server, with 7 faculties encompassing 9 schools offering 47 programs, and a student population of approximately 10,000 with approximately 700 faculty members, 100 administration officials, and 200 support staff.
Academics
Kantō University offers a comprehensive education covering all major fields in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Research is one of the key focuses of the university, particularly in the sciences, which is reflected by numerous partnerships with government departments and local private companies as well as the presence of several advanced research buildings.
Undergraduate students are divided among 6 faculties for those with declared majors and the School of Letters and Sciences for those currently undecided or waiting on limited enrollment programs. Undergraduate students typically spend four years at the university, with the first two years focused on general education and introductory courses in their major, and their third and fourth years focused on upper level courses in or related to their major. Graduation requirements include meeting major requirements, general education requirements, and a minimum number of credits. Some majors as well as the combined Bachelor and Major degree programs require an additional one to two years of upper level studies and have a higher minimum number of credits for graduation.
Postgraduate students are enrolled in the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies, which offers both Master's and Doctorate degrees. Postgraduate students spend several years studying at the university and, if they wish or are required to, taking qualification exams. In addition, they conduct research with an advising faculty member, with at least one paper required for graduation. They are also commonly hired to serve as lecturers for lower level courses and teaching assistants for professors.
Programs
The university's Honors program is intended to benefit students with higher academic abilities, with only 100 enrolling students, or 5%, entering each year. Admittance is decided by elements from the applicant's regular application as well additional materials required only for applicants to the Honors program. Honors students are required to take a combination of Honors versions of their classes and Honors seminars to fulfill a credit requirement in order to receive an Honors citation.
The university also offers separate programs oriented towards entrepreneurship, research, and foreign languages, each of which have their own application processes.
Admissions
Each year, on average, Kantō University receives nearly 20,000 undergraduate applications, of which 2,250 applications are admitted with 2,000 enrolling, for an admission rate of 11.25% and an admission yield of 10%. Undergraduate students are admitted by the University and not by the Faculty of the major they wish to pursue. In the event of enrollment number restrictions for a major, students will be placed in the School of Letters and Sciences. Key factors in the application include previous academics, extracurriculars, test scores, essays, and letters of recommendation. Less important factors include an optional interview, and factors not considered include demographics such as race and gender.
