Lanatam is a city founded by MPolo455 on his first city on the server, on January 24, 2020. Lanatam approximately has 140 builds. Even though most of the city has been built by MPolo455, many other people have contributed to its edification with their building skills or tips.
Lanatam is currently in the Federated States of the New World.
Etymology
According to Wiktionary, lanatam in Latin (lānātam) is the accusative feminine singular of lānātus, which means wooly. However, this meaning was unknown until MPolo455 looked it up on the Internet, which happened months after the creation of the city.
Tourism
Many people visit Lanatam and its monuments, but they also come to learn more about its culture and to feel the unique ambiance of the city. Tourism is a major sector of the city’s economy and it is vital for many small businesses.
Major touristic attractions
- Lanatam Gardens - With buildings all around, it is a perfect example of an urban park. The impressive andesite horse statue is by far one of the most famous monuments in Lanatam, and one of the symbols of the city.
- Lanatam Cathedral and its Forest - Witness of the old years of Lanatam, the breathtaking cathedral attracts many tourists every year. The forest around the building is a wonder of landscaping.
- Orange Battery Park - This historic Monument located on the shore of the Lanatam River has witnessed many major historic events. Visiting Battery Park is visiting the past itself.
- Flag Park - This quiet park in Riverside offers an unique view of the Cathedral and the Downtown area.
- Central Plaza - The Central Plaza is located in the middle of the city, in front of the community center. If Lanatam has a heart, it’s there!
Territory
The territory of Lanatam divided into six unique districts. Each one has its own particularities and its own characteristics. The city is delimited by the Swamp in the north, by the Sylla River in the east, and by the West River in the west.
Central Lanatam
It is the downtown area and where the first buildings were built. Most of the skyscrapers are located there, but towers are not the only thing in Central Lanatam; there are plenty of shops and apartments. There are many companies' headquarters (mostly wool companies) and hotels located in Central Lanatam. Furthermore, this district is without any doubt the one in which you can find the most famous buildings and landmarks: the Lanatam Gardens, a Central Park in the heart of the town, the Lanatam Auditorium, the Lanatam City Hall, the spleef arena and the Lanatam Community Center. Well-planned streets combined with wonderful buildings and statutes make Central Lanatam a really unique place on the MRT. In terms of transit, the district is also deserved very well by the subway, with an impressive amount of five stations, more than any other district.
Orange
Orange is a residential/commercial district in the north of the city. Like Central Lanatam, there are some skyscrapers in this district. As said in the name, the district is famous for the presence of orange in most of the buildings. Orange has the only roundabout of the whole city, located just before the bridge over the Lanatam River that connects Orange with Central Lanatam. Furthermore, some buildings in the district, particularly near the Lanatam River, have non-cubic shapes, like curves and diagonals. This characteristic is quite rare in Lanatam, and, with the orange color, makes the uniqueness of Orange among Lanatam's districts. In terms of special builds, Orange has the Orange Hospital, deserving most of the city, and beautiful commercial streets, attracting many small businesses and art galleries.
Industrial
Industrial is the only industrial district of Lanatam. As specified in the name, there are many factories of all types there. Most of them are wool factories, due to the prominence of this sector of the industry in Lanatam, but there are also other types of factories: metallurgy, alimentation, energy, aeronautics, textiles, and many more. Despite not being very tourist-friendly, Industrial shows a different side of the city, and very unique in its own way.
Riverside
This district is a commercial and touristic district. It is also the largest in terms of size and of population. Relatively new compared to its neighbors, Riverside presents another way to visit Lanatam: where space is not restricted, where streets are wide, houses are spacious and buildings are not so high. Riverside is a perfect mix between the suburb and the downtown (Central Lanatam), putting the good aspects of each together. Despite being a lot commercial and residential near the Lanatam River, there is a cozy residential area near the Sylla River (the river in the east, which is the eastern border of Lanatam) and this district is the home of about 35% of the Lanatam Population.
Lake Heights
Located near Long Lake, Lake Heights is the wealthier district in the city. Unlike other districts, the buildings are not built in height and the density is lower. Lake Heights is without any doubt the suburb of the city. However, it is very close to the center of Lanatam, meaning that its residents have access to the facilities of the downtown. Recently, Lake Heights obtained the title of Greener District, given to the district with the smallest ecological footprint in Lanatam. Lake Heights is full of trees, and they are not seen as a barrier to development but a treasure to protect and to valorize. The district is far in front of the rest of the town in terms of environment; the fight against big environmental challenges being generally unpopular in Lanatam except in this district.
South Lanatam
South Lanatam is a dense and poor district. It is mostly the home of the workers working in the nearby Industrial district. It still faces a lot of social and economic challenges today, even though the overall life quality has improved in the last decade. Crime and poverty are probably the biggest challenges. Today, massive operations against all types of crime in South Lanatam have made the crime rate to drop. The district is nonetheless known for its delicious restaurants, the most famous in the city. It is a good place to try Lanatam gastronomy!

Lore
1552-1580
Lanatam was founded the 24th of January, 1582, by a group of settlers, originating from many of the largest cities of the MRT. They were looking for better life conditions than the ones present in MRT's overpopulated gamma cities. They chose a fertile plain near bountiful forests to build their town. Soon after the foundation, Lanatam's first inhabitants met representatives from the newly founded towns of Ludkrona and Trickdale.
1581-1829
This period is mainly characterized by an economic growth and a rapid expansion of the town. The first and of the best examples of this is the edification of Lanatam Cathedral, in 1589. It's the oldest remaining building of the town. The cathedral has been built by a ludkronian architect, a symbol of the cooperation between the two towns. However, the growing rivalry with Orange, then an independent city, brought Lanatam to defend itself and to raise an army. Several wars and endless skirmishes took place on the two sides of the Lanatam River. The climax of this tumultuous relation was in 1697, during the Third Lanatamo-Orangese War, when Orange troops partially destroyed the roof of the Lanatam Cathedral, triggering an angry mob everywhere in Lanatam, and the War came to an end soon after, with the defeat of Orange. The loosing town was finally annexed peacefully and diplomatically into Lanatam, in 1829. This ended a 2 centuries-long rivalry.
Lanatam was growing faster than any other city in the region. The fertility of the land combined with mass immigration, made the town more influential every day. Multiple rail and road connections have been established between Lanatam and other, larger cities of central MRT. These routes also brought scientific discoveries to Lanatam, and they were very beneficial for the city: agricultural innovations helped prevent famines, medical innovation helped to fight against diseases and viruses. With famines and pandemics becoming a thing of the past, Lanatam could only grow larger.
1830-2020
In early 19th century, industrialization and modernization were speading rapidly throughout the MRT, Lanatam, Ludkrona and Trickdale had to do a choice: Should they follow the steps of most cities in the MRT and modernize or should they resist modernization to preserve what they already have?
The three towns took a different path: Trickdale chose to resist modernization in its entirety, Ludkrona chose to keep its old architectural style, but allow modern benefits such as cars and trains. However, Lanatam chose to jump into modernization. Whole districts were destroyed to make place for new skyscrapers, old roads became wide boulevards and trains entered the city for the first time in 1851. One of the last builds of the pre-modernization era is the Lanatam Cathedral. These major transformations made the town as we know it in 2020. The Lanatam Gardens opened in 1840, the first Lanatam train station opened in 1850, Lanatam Community Center was built in 1869, and the Lanatam river walls were constructed in 1897.
The Lanatam of the 20th century was trying to reach the skies. Tall skyscrapers were being built left and right during this period from the Marco Polo's Hotel to the Lanatam Stock Excahnge no stone was left unturned. Finally, the installation of two horse statues on both sides of the Lanatam River in 1952 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Town, was met with large public acclaim.
In the sixties, many large protests have divided the population of Lanatam, sometimes leading to violent confrontations. In 1964, a new party created to unite all communist movements in the city, named the LFP, ignited many riots in 1964-1965, harshly repressed by the police. On July 28th, 1965, a young group of pro-capitalism killed an important LFP leader during the popular Lanatam Festival. The reaction of communist fanatics happened soon after. Bombs were placed in mailboxes, some buildings were burnt intentionally, armed fighting occurred at many places and the angry crowd stormed into the city hall. Over 100 people got killed or injured in this horror night. Martial law was declared, order was restored by the army. Soon after, the mayor at the time ordered a dissolution of the LFP, even though it was not directly linked to the events of the 28th, and the incarceration of influent communist leaders. The official communist movement has died, but its ghosts have haunted Lanatam for many years after 1965.
In 1967, a peaceful manifestation against a drastic raise in the army's budget, was forced to stop because of police. Many people mobilized themselves and got on the streets. The government reacted fiercely at first, but a change of administration contributed to de-escalate the situation. On his End-of-the-Year Speach, the mayor announced the liberation of twelve communist leaders against whom no accusations were proved. He accepted to reduce the raise promised to the army, and the conflict ended peacefully.
The year 1970 saw an outburst of violence once again, when an fanatic entered the Marco Polo's Hotel and take a Councillor in hostage. After 5 hours of painful negotiations, the hostage was killed and the fanatic got shot. National funerals were organized to mourn the death of the Councillor, and he was buried among in the River Cemetery, among the greatest.
Lanatam enjoyed a relative peace after these tumultuous years: criminality was dropping and economy was rising. In 1979, a commission was created to find the truth about the 28th of July-events. In their report, named The Failed Communist Revolution of Lanatam, they expose the point of view of many major participants, including those in jail, whose opinions have been censored before this date. In 1987, a cure is found against the STKD-02 disease, commonly called the Plague of the Old. This disease has been killing elders of the Lanatam Region for many centuries. Finally, the change of millennium brought a new era to the city, burying forever the horrors of the last century.
The COVID-19 pandemic hit Lanatam in April 2020. Many people get sick, but severe rules kept the virus out of healthcare facilities and residents for elders. Despite a rough start, Lanatam is now doing well against the pandemic, and the number of deaths stayed surprisingly low.
Politics
The ruler of Lanatam is called the mayor, and is nominated for a term of 10 years by the Assembly of councillors. This Assembly consists of 6 councillors, representing a district each. Councillors are often affiliated to a political party. Currently, 3 parties are represented in the Assembly: the Orange Party, with 2 Councillors, the Blue and the Green Party, with 1 Councillor each, and 2 Independents. At the end of every mayoral term, the Assembly has to vote unanimously for one of its members who will take the office of Mayor. This situation forces political parties to cooperate with each other. Once nominated, the Mayor has to choose a Deputy Mayor. The Mayor has almost all executive powers and splits legislative powers with the Assembly and the Deputy Mayor, but judiciary powers are nonetheless apart from the influence of the Administration. The place left by the Councillor who has become mayor is given to another citizen by the Mayor.
The Government has never really been very involved into the city’s affairs. Over the 50 past years, Lanatam administration has intervened a little into them, which is giving a lot of autonomy to all citizens.
Many people believe that a regime where you cannot elect your rulers is a regime where you cannot express your opinions freely. In Lanatam it is not the case. Citizens are free to have the opinions of their choice and express them as they wish. The government is not restricting free speech at all.
Economy
Lanatam's main economic sectors are tourism and wool. The manufacturing sector is also big. The city exports a lot of goods, but imports a lot as well. The main exportations are wooly products and manufactured goods and the main importations are high-tech products and minerals. The state is not involved in the economy, because, as written before, the government never intervened a lot into the society in Lanatam.
Population
Ethnic Groups
The population of Lanatam is a mix of diverse origins. The three main group of population are the Western-Gammans, with 123,667 people (34%), the Espilonians, with 120,902 people (33%), and the Central Gammans, with 69,344 people (19%). The rest of the population is divided into the other population groups, such as the Southern Gammans (3%), the Northern Gammans (5%), the Zetans (2%), the Bahians (2%), the Eastern Gammans (1%), and the Ancients (from the old world) (1%).
Population Growth and Immigration
Immigration has always been the main cause of the growth of the Lanatamese Population. Population Specialists divide immigration in Lanatam into 2 phases:
First Phase of Immigration, or Colonization Phase
Between 1552 and 1720, but also before 1552, people were coming to Lanatam and its region attracted by the abundance of fertile and cheap land. The population was growing due to its surroundings, where settlers chopped down acres of forest to create farmlands. The city itself was not very populous, and relatively small compared to the surrounding land. The majority of the immigrants was from Western and Central Gamma
Second Phase of Immigration, or Urban Phase
Since 1721, the Urban area attracted most of the immigrants due to the jobs created by this growing phenomenon called industrialization. It did not only bring people form abroad, many people living in the rural areas around Lanatam moved in the city. This phase was also different from the other due in terms of the provenance of the immigrants. Most of them were Epsilonians, but some of them were from regions very far away such as Bahia.
Languages
Lanatam has officially two official languages: English and French. However, English has always had a more important place in the city because of the bigger number of speakers. Over the last century the ratio between English speakers and French speakers has become more important. Organized movements to defend language diversity have appeared in Lanatam in the late 1980, and since then, those movements have become more and more powerful. They mainly complain about the fact that most of the public signage is written in English only, so it is hard for the 11% of non-English speakers to understand basic information. The fight for bilingual signage is a pretty big debate among the Lanatamese Society, some arguing French and other languages deserve to have a similar status than English and other wanting to strengthen the English dominance, because other languages are loosing speakers over years.

Serena
Lanatam is a proud partner of Serena. Because the Lanatam government believes partnerships and other such deals will be invaluable for the future and prosperity of Lanatam, Serena's flag is one of the four flags present in the Lanatam Gardens, amongst the flags of the MRT, Lanatam and of the Federated States of the New World.
Federated States of The New World
Lanatam is also a part of the Federated States of the New World (FS). The mayor MPolo455 is also the Vice-President of the FS. All the FS members can request for an office for free in the FS building.
Ludkrona
Ludkrona is a town owned by Dartvader2005. It is located near Lanatam. MPolo455 and Dartvader2005 talked about a future partnership between the two towns. Both mayors are also planning to build a road connecting Lanatam and Ludkrona.
Transit
MRT
Lanatam is connected to the main MRT network. Lanatam is located on the MRT Western Line (WN33).

Lanatam has two beautiful train stations, and a total of 19 platforms, including 8 high-speed platforms and 11 for subruban trains. The main Train Station is located just under Lanatam Airfield, which provides a direct connection with the airfield and the subway.
SICF has decided to end its first line, called the Northwest Connector, in Lanatam. From here, the company has the possibility to build a future line to Carnoustie or Autunno. Other warp train companies have expressed their interest into connecting Lanatam with other neighbouring towns.
A Regional rail company, Valley Express, founded by Crimsonf0x, is also planning to build a light-rail in the region that would go through Lanatam. Infrastructure has still to be built.
Helicopter/Airship
Located on the top of the Lanatam Transit Society, the first one is operated by RodBla Heli, connecting Lanatam with Sansvikk and Kleinsburg. The other helipad allowed with the Mayor Rank has been given to MRT Airships. Lanatam is on the Aerostat Line, connecting the city to Oparia, Carnoustie, and many other towns and cities. There are an additional 8 helipads included in the 7,500 blocks allocation that is coming with Senator Rank. Four of them are used by FS Heli, the national helicopter company of the Federated States. A complete list of helipads is available here.
Airplane
Lanatam has a small airfield. Located on Hythe Street, near the MRT station, Lanatam Airfield is connecting the city with many other cities all around the MRT. Of course, future airplane connections will be available as soon as the city gets Governor.
Subway
The subway network will be expanded as the city grows.
Lanatam has a subway system connecting the city. Even though it is not completed yet, some parts are fully operational, mostly in Central Lanatam. The subway is a long project, which will still take a good amount of time to finish, even with the help of Bazifli1000000.
Climate
The Climate of Lanatam is tempered. Winters are chill, with a bit of snow, and summers are hot, but not much. Climate data is collected by Lanatam Weather Station, located on the top of the Marco Polo hotel, the tallest skyscraper in the city.

Sports
Lanatam is not a city known for sports, but there is a big spleef arena. Spleef is the only popular sport in Lanatam.
The Spleef Arena has been built by MPolo455, but the scoreboard was designed by DintyB. There are two media lodges, and, excluding lodges, a total of 108 seats. The arena is open to everyone, but please do not break anything or mess with redstone. Unlike most of spleef arenas, the Lanatam Spleef Arena is indoor, so you can play spleef without worrying about rain or any other weather conditions.
On the top of the spleef arena, there is the Lanatam Spleef Organization (LSO) building. This organization manages all of the spleef affairs in Lanatam.
There is also a sumo arena built on the corner of Train Avenue and City Hall Boulevard, near the airfield.
