The MRTvision Screenshot Contest 9 was the ninth edition of the MRTvision Screenshot Contest. The contest is a server-wide screenshot competition with Eurovision-style voting and representation.

The ceremony took place in Wazamawazi, following autobus22's win at the eighth contest with the screenshot "Before Closing". The contest debuted with a soft opening on August 17, 2021, and an official opening on August 21, 2021. The contest's slogan was "To The Stars and Beyond!". The winner was revealed on September 25, 2021, at 8 p.m. UTC at the Wazamawazi Tau Ceti Film Club & Mini-Cinema. There was an official MBS prerecorded broadcast for both the semi-final and final ceremonies.

The contest had 40 participants, referred to as "cities". The winner was Wazamawazi with "Villaggio Mistico", a screenshot of Caprica taken by autobus22. Lapis Bay came second with the screenshot "A Glimpse of Hope" and Peripotamia came third with the screenshot "Sail Away and Find Tranquility". With this win, autobus22 became the first person to win the MRTvision Screenshot Contest three times.

Production

The contest was first announced on August 15, 2021, by MinecraftYoshi26 submitting an event funding proposal to the August 2021 ISM. The host city was announced as Wazamawazi on the same day.

The non-qualifiers' placements and point totals in the semi-finals were released on September 24, 2021, following voting being completed for the final.

Venue

The contest's results ceremonies took place for the second time in Wazamawazi, following Wazamawazi's victory in the previous edition with the screenshot "Before Closing", taken by autobus22. The city previously hosted the third contest. The host venue was announced on August 17, 2021.

The contest took place at Wazamawazi's mini-theater, the Wazamawazi Tau Ceti Film Club & Mini-Cinema. The venue was constructed by autobus22 in July 2021 for the contest. The entrance to the theater is located above an outdoor shopping center. The venue's specific location was selected as it is located above the location of autobus22's winning screenshot. The closest transit to the theater is the Tau Ceti bus stop outside of the shopping center, with Queen Maxima Station on RaiLinQ and Kessler-Wazamawazi East Station on the MRT Taiga Line being the closest train stations.

With only nine seats, the theater is the smallest host venue of any MRTvision Screenshot Contest.

Visual design

The contest's slogan was announced on August 15, 2021. The contest's logo was revealed a day later and is an edited complication of an image of two vectors: a constellation by freepik and a night sky by piksuperstar. The logo was compiled and edited by RacCort, and designed by autobus22. The logo is based on the constellation Cetus, the namesake of the contest's host venue.

The intro to the MBS broadcast featured the contest's logo being drawn in a night sky with a flying rocket showcasing some entries to the contest. The outro of the broadcast for the final ceremony featured a montage of the finalist screenshots in reverse place order and a timelapse of the outside of the Wazamawazi Tau Ceti Film Club & Mini-Cinema.

Format

Similarly to the previous contests, the contest featured members representing cities, each submitting a screenshot to be voted on by the participants and the willing public. Each city and willing non-participants award a set of 12, 10, 8–1 points to their 10 favorite screenshots, respectively. Each participant is required to vote. Failing to vote or voting strategically can result in the participant facing disqualification or a possible ban from participating in future contests. Similarly to most of the previous contests, there was no theme.

The deadline to join was announced as August 29, 2021. The deadline to send in a screenshot was announced as September 11, 2021. After the semi-final ceremony, the draw order was selected for the final, and voting opened for the final near the end of the ceremony. The winner is able to influence the slogan for the next contest, choose the next host city, and receive $3,000. Second place received $2,000. Third place received $1,000. All competitors received $20 as a participatory stipend for voting. The top 10 were featured on the MRT website.

Semi-final allocation draw

On August 21, 2021, it was confirmed that there would be two semi-finals. As the prior winner, Wazamawazi automatically qualifies for the final and votes in both semi-finals. The top 10 screenshots from each semi-final advance to the final.

The 39 semi-finalists were allocated into five pots for a semi-final allocation draw, based on aggregate rankings by participant, not by city, from prior contest data. Drawing from different pots helps to reduce the chance of lopsided semi-finals by predicted placement from prior contests. The semi-final allocations were made on August 30, 2021. Wazamawazi's draw number for the final was also selected.

• Arbatskaya Moscow – On August 27, 2021, MikeRoma was asked about participating and said that he wouldn't have time to participate. Arbatskaya Moscow last participated in the eighth contest.
• Cardinal Bay – On August 23, 2021, notshort925 was asked about participating and noted that he believed he did not have enough time to participate. Cardinal Bay last participated in the eighth contest.
• Chillington – On August 18, 2021, CyAmethyst officially declared participation under Silverville. Thus, there was no representative for Chillington. Chillington last participated in the eighth contest.
• Encinitas – On June 16, 2021, kyyl_ left the server and transferred Encinitas to KittyCat11231. On August 17, 2021, KittyCat11231 officially declared participation under the City-State of Kitania. Thus, there was no representative for Encinitas. Encinitas last participated in the eighth contest.
• Macapa – On August 18, 2021, SAYNOAHREBL_ officially declared participation under Itavanga. Thus, there was no representative for Macapa. Macapa last participated in the eighth contest.
• Millville – On August 24, 2021, Sasha9076 officially declared participation; however, on August 26, 2021, they withdrew. Millville last participated in the eighth contest.
• New Amsterdam – On August 21, 2021, Red_Ray was asked about participating and stated that he had "started to become more and more inactive on the server" and did not have any intentions to participate. New Amsterdam last participated in the eighth contest.
