The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the government agency responsible for regional transportation planning and financing of the Antioch-Bay Point Metropolitan Area. As the central MPO of the area, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission is designed to manage the regional transit card (GO Card) , manage area bridges, and help mayors ensure transit links serves all the member cities, and to research and draw up plans for new method of construction, transportation, and city growth management.
The Headquarters of the MTC is located in Antioch. It consists of the MTC board room, GO Card customer service center, and mayor's offices where mayors build offices for their city.
History
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission was formed in 1982 when the mayors of the region agreed to create a commission to oversee the construction and management of new transportation infrastructure that were being built. At the time, traffic levels in the Antioch region were at breaking point as roads were at maximum capacity during rush hour and the region's bus network seemed very uncoordinated to help solve these issues. The first steps the commission took was to create an integrated regional transit system that would later become Tri Cities Transit. But, it took a decade before the MTC could work out all the kinks of managing a integrated regional transit system and to secure funds to manage it all. First, the MTC set up the Northern Regional Transportation Agency (NRTA) in 1983 to link the surrounding suburbs with the city of Antioch. The network then expanded and started local bus service in Peripotamia to link residents to the bus station to take an express bus into Antioch or to any of the three train stations in Peripotamia. The integrated regional transit network was soon completed in 1992 when the NRTA merged with Antioch City Bus and the City of Bay Point Trolley. The MTC also was in charge of building the Eastside Tunnel which was finished in 1985. In 1999, the MTC began to work on implementing a regional transit fare-collection system called the GO Card where transit riders can use a single card to travel on public transportation throughout the Antioch region.
Governance
The MTC is guided by a 1-member board of commissioners:
