Rapid Networks is a subsidiary company of Rapid Enterprises. Its main “job” is to provide the infrastructure needed for the operation of Rapid Communications. This includes the planning, building and maintaining of the fiber optic cables (Redstone wires), radiolinks (vertical satellite dish based), data centers, Rednet Exchange Points, data hubs and other infrastructure used by Rapid Communications. Rapid Networks also rents out virtual black fibre through wavelength multiplexing and constructs “City Networks” (refer to the section “City Network”).
Background and Company Goal
In the dimension called the earth, there is something called the Internet. How it works is a complicated story and there is a lot of infrastructure involved which many people don’t know about. Every time you visit this page the data travels through many kilometers of fibre cable (sometimes to the other side of the world) and through several internet exchange points and carriers (ISPs) to reach its destination. So many are involved to achieve this and many people don’t even know about this huge, and so important, infrastructure needed to power today’s society (and your desire to read this page). Rapid Networks (together with Rapid Enterprises and Rapid Communications) strives to replicate (parts of) this Internet infrastructure on the MRT (in the Gamma world) to make the server more modern and realistic.
Network
The Rapid Networks data network consist of fiber optic cables (Redstone wires) and radiolinks (vertical satellite dish based). The network is currently under construction. Refer to the section “Current Areas Covered” for more info.
Antenna Design and Cable Design
Rapid Networks uses a patented design for its fibre cables and radiolink transmission towers. The design allows for the transmission of data at high speeds with high reliability and low latency.
Services
Rapid Networks rents out virtual black fibre through wavelength multiplexing.
City Network
Towns and cities are offered the possibility to create a City Network. This means that either a fibre connection is prepared in or built to the town/city or that a radiolink transmission tower is built in the town/city. If the city network is fibre based a “data hub” is constructed underground somewhere in or nearby the town/city. The City Network allows citizens of the town/city to easily connect to Rapid Networks Fibre or use other services provided by Rapid Communications such as the Rednet Connection Service.
Current Areas Covered
Currently Rapid Networks is constructing its data network. When the first construction stage is completed the network will cover the area around Watchfield A8 Serena West/Watchfield (and Whitechapel). The network is planned to expand in the north-west of the Gamma World, as well as a branch to the south-west. The CEO the_blockmaster has said that the network will possibly expand to other areas in the future.
Rapid Networks will also build a datacenter in Watchfield from where Rapid Communications will provide its services. For instance the cloud services, server hosting and colocation will be provided from here. The datacenter will also host DNS-servers and other equipment related to the Rednet Connection Service provided by Rapid Communications.
