Stillwater (スティルウォター, Sutiruu-ota) is a town founded and owned by ReallyTuck, located in Ward 5 of the New World. Stillwater was founded on October 10, 2022. It is the capital and largest settlement of the state of Satellia.

The town's general aesthetic is inspired by media such as Tekkonkinkreet, Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko, Eastward, and the Fallout series, giving the town a look that can generally be described as 'unkempt' or 'derelict'.

Etymology

English Name

The name 'Stillwater' originates from the topography of the town's region, where many craters can be found dotting the landscape. These crates would accumulate water over time when it rains, forming stagnant ponds around the place. Hence, these craters provided an accessible water source for the settlers of the region, in which they decided to name the town after it. The origins of these craters still remain a mystery, with many people debating that it was the result of a war that happened many years ago, while others argue that it was the result of drilling activity for the purpose of extracting natural resources.

In reality, the name 'Stillwater' was inspired by the name Fallingwater, a house designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Japanese Name

Originally, Stillwater was known as Shizuike (静池) in Japanese. Shizuike is a kanji compound of 静 (shizu, "quite, silent") and 池 (ike, "pond, pool, reservoir"). The name, which can be translated as "silent pond", is a reference to the ponds in the region, similar to it's English name. The name Shizuike was rendered obsolete after the town adopted the katakana transcription "スティルウォター" (Sutiruu-ota) as it's official Japanese name. However, the name survives in other forms, with Shizuike Heavy Industries being a prominent example of the name still in use today.

Unlike it's English name, the Japanese name is not a reference to anything in the real world. Rather, it is simply a direct translation of the English name into Japanese.

History

Founding

The town was founded on the 10th of October, 2022, which started a day after ReallyTuck was promoted to member. The town was founded on a plains biome that is surrounded by forests, mountains, and swamps. The location was picked as it was not yet claimed by anyone and was near Cape Cambridge, which ReallyTuck was exploring during that time. The town was officially established with the creation of a garage, which became ReallyTuck's first business and residence.

Incorporation into the Federal Republic of Meridia

On the 13th of October, 2022, ReallyTuck discussed the idea of connecting his town with PaintedBlue's city of Cape Cambridge. It was then decided that Stillwater would be part of Meridia, under the territory of Satellia.

Creation of Belvedere and the Expansion of the Road Network

On the 10th of December, 2022, Both ReallyTuck and Needn_NL decided on creating a new town located west from Stillwater called Belvedere, as both parties have wanted to work on a project together. Due to how close Stillwater is with Belvedere, both towns are being connected with the same road network. This has led to the rapid expansion of Stillwater's road network in tandem with the road network in Belvedere.

Geography

Stillwater is located in the southern part of the Zeta region of the New World. it lies on a plains biome that is adjacent to a forest to the north, a mountain to the south, and a swamp to the west. The only major town that is the closest to Stillwater is Oceanside, which is located down south from Stillwater.

Architecture and Urban Landscape

The architecture that is present in Stillwater comes from different styles, mainly consisting of contemporary and modern architecture but with a few resembling Western or Asian styles. The general look of buildings are indirectly, if not mostly inspired by post-apocalyptic media, bearing a heavy emphasis on dilapidation and overgrowth.

The urban landscape of Stillwater mostly consist of low to mid-rise buildings. Due to Stillwater being set on a hilly region, a lot of buildings are set in much higher elevation than others, with some streets needing to be built on an incline. This has led to some buildings needing raised walkways in order to access them.

Notable Structures

The Pink Palace

The restored interiors of The Pink Palace

The Pink Palace is the town hall building of Stillwater, housing the Mayor's Office, the Stillwater Event Hall, and the Stillwater General Assembly. It was designed with elements of Greek Revival and Federalist architecture, which resulted in a domineering-looking structure. Formerly the residence of a rich baron who settled in the region, it has since been abandoned. The Pink Palace stood dormant for over a few decades, with nature settling into the cracks and crevices of the once mighty palace. The government decided to hold a vote, whether it should be demolished or if it should be repurposed into a public facility. The majority of residence voted for the building to be repurposed, and it was decided that The Pink Palace would become Stillwater's town hall. After the vote, the building's interiors have been renovated to accommodate the required functions for a town hall. The exterior however was left unchanged due to a lack of funds.

Deputy Mansion

The Deputy Mansion is a large Victorian mansion that serves as the main residence of the deputy mayor. The house is a mix of different elements of Victorian architecture, borrowing from styles such as Italianate, Gothic, and Queen Anne. The house was built for the deputy mayor, Needn_NL, as a Christmas gift from ReallyTuck. The first floor of the house features a large living room with a fireplace, a dining room, a kitchen, and a small conservatory, while the second floor features two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a study.

The Silver Stream Pub

The Silver Stream Pub

The Silver Stream is an English pub that is located right across the town hall. The building is designed to resemble a typical country pub in England. Like the Deputy Mansion, the pub was made as a Christmas gift. It was given to LondonThameslink who now owns and runs the pub. The pub is featured as an entry in the 11th MRTvision Screenshot Contest, representing Stillwater itself.

Planning and Future Expansion

The town of Stillwater is set to be a large city in the near future, much in contrast with what has been built currently. The town would be renamed to Rocket City, a planned-city that would have it's urban core located northeast from Stillwater.

Public Transportation System

Currently, Stillwater does not have any plans to accommodate public transport, as it's size has not grown big enough to need a system for mass transit. However, there are plans in the near future to create a transportation system once Stillwater grows to a suitable size.
