This underground station, which opened on August 17, 1908 as a shuttle to 2nd Avenue. It was built primarily to allow direct subway access to  EN15  New Bakersville - Uptown, as 2nd Avenue Station was one block away to the west. The original station consisted of one island platform, and two terminating tracks. The station was closed on June 20, 1915 to allow construction on the Fifth Avenue Line's extension. On March 3, 1921, the station was reopened on the newly extended Fifth Avenue Line, with two island platforms and four tracks. It has two exits, one at the south east corner of First Avenue and another in the MRT station. both exits have elevators.
