Venceslo-Fifth Ward International Airport (VFW) is an airport in the city of Venceslo. It was built by time2makemymove and is run by the Venceslo District Association of Governments (VenDAG). It was built to function as Venceslo's primary airport, and to further this notion, UAV, the city’s Senator airfield, was demolished upon VFW's completion.
There are 60 total aircraft gates within four concourses: A, B, C, and D. All concourses are accessed by a central entry and exit passenger processing building, known as the "Central Terminal," and an airport access road loop.
The airport is FliHigh Airlines' original hub. Said hub is tied for the largest on the MRT server with 99 flights (tied with FliHigh's other hub, SDZ). Said hub also has the second-highest ridership out of all airports on the New World, and third-highest on the entire MRT Server. All FliHigh flights are located in Concourse B as part of the HiWorld Concourse.
The airport is served by the VMet Airport station and the STC <K> line.
History
VFW Origins
Venceslo-Fifth Ward International Airport was conceived as soon as Venceslo itself received Governor on February 1, 2018. It was built to replace Venceslo University Airfield (UAV), Venceslo's original Senator airfield. The airport began construction on February 10, and was fully complete and open on March 11. There were originally four concourses: A, B, and C for small planes, and H for helicopters, all radiating out from the Central Terminal, containing ticketing, baggage claim, shopping, and dining. The airport's original runway, 13/31, was at the time the only commercial-use diagonal runway on the New World.
The first hub at the airport was established by FlyCreeper, who owned all the gates at Concourse C. However, on April 2, 2018, FlyCreeper's hub was spun off from FlyCreeper and became its own airline, FliHigh Airlines. This airline's presence and hub at VFW quickly grew in size, and to support this VFW opened the FliHigh-exclusive Concourse D on December 11, 2018. To make room for this new expansion, VFW destroyed the original diagonal runway, which was replaced with Runway 18/36 that was more traditionally shaped.
At the same time, in December 2018, Concourse B was expanded with three new gates, and a central shopping area connected to the newly built VFW underground passageway system. This connected Concourse B to the rest of the airport by foot for the first time, as before then the only way to access the concourse was through bus service from the Central Terminal.
On February 15, 2019, the Helipads on the roof of the Central Terminal were demolished. This was originally to make room for a larger central terminal: however, these plans would not come to fruition until The New VFW Renewal Project, 2.5 years later.
On July 29, 2020, Concourse C was temporarily closed and demolished for a full scale remodel. As such, all FliHigh flights serving Concourse C at the time were moved to the recently constructed remote gates facility (Concourse R) located north of Concourse D. Concourse D's east end was consequently remodeled to fit a tunnel to Concourse R, as well as a future FliHigh Airlines HiMiles Lounge. The new 12-gate Concourse C began construction on November 4, 2020, and officially opened one day later. Flights were assigned to the concourse a month later on December 17.
The New VFW Renewal Project
On September 3, 2021, The New VFW Renewal Project was announced. This plan included demolishing and rebuilding Concourses B, D, and the Central Terminal, and rebuilding them to address the current needs of VFW. On September 6, the first phase of construction began and ended, which involved demolishing Concourse B and its surrounding tarmac and building a new concourse and gates to replace it.
On September 21, The New VFW Renewal Project continued. The western half of the original Central Terminal was demolished, and construction on the new Airport Access Road commenced. On September 24, the rest of the terminal was demolished and construction on the new Central Terminal commenced. The new Central Terminal was officially opened in October 2021, with three levels, a multi-level arrivals and departures roadway system, a new central mall, direct connection to the VMet and STC transit systems, and a pedestrian bridge to the new Concourse B, finally linking Concourse B directly to the Central Terminal.
On October 19, 2021, FliHigh Airlines moved all it's operations at VFW over the three concourses C, D, and R to the new Concourse B, as part of a reorganization of flight systems for easier connections. As such, virtually all airlines at VFW moved gate locations across the airport, and the remote gate stands were vacated. Two days later, FliHigh founded the HiWorld Alliance, and moved all HiWorld-affiliated airlines to Concourse B as well. The concourse was consequently renamed the "HiWorld Concourse" to reflect this change.
On December 24, 2021, the final piece of The New VFW Renewal Project began. The old Concourse D was demolished for reconstruction, and the remote gate stands were demolished permanently to make room for the airport's first ever medium size gates. Concourse D was functionally completed on January 6, 2022. This left Concourse A as now the only concourse at VFW that has not been completely rebuilt at some point in it's lifespan - and due to the concourse now being considered a Venceslo Historical Landmark, this will likely remain the case.
2024 Modernization/East Venceslo Road Reconstruction Project
On January 27, 2024, time2makemymove decided the approach ramps to VFW, built during The New VFW Renewal Project but never fully completed, were stupid, and began the East Venceslo Road Reconstruction Project to remedy this. This project combined Stationtown Parkway with Southwest Heights Road into a one-way loop road feeding into a new entry to VFW's dual-level approach ramps, while also building a new exit to VFW's dual-level approach ramps that feed into a brand new roundabout on the northwest side of the airport. The first phase of this project was completed on that same day, the second phase was completed on March 16, 2024, and the final phase was completed on March 30, 2024. In doing this reconstruction and freeing up unlimited northward expansion of the VFW Central Terminal, the Central Terminal's north end was demolished and partially rebuilt. The anchor of this new expansion will be a new FliHigh Hotel, the shell of which was built in January once the old approach ramps were demolished.
On May 5, 2024, 2.5 years after the rest of the New VFW Renewal Project was completed, the arrivals level of the central terminal was finally furnished with working baggage claims. In addition, the south parking garage was expanded northward to connect directly with the central terminal, taking over space formerly occupied by VFW's original single-lane arrivals/departures roadway built when the airport first opened in 2018.
On May 21, 2024, The FliHigh Hotel @VFW began construction.
