The Victoria line is a Boston Underground deep-level line that runs between the northeast coast of Boston and West Boston, via Central Boston. It is colored light blue on the map and signage and is one of the two lines to run entirely underground.
History
Early Proposals
The Victoria line was made primarily to reduce congestion in Central Boston by running directly through the city center, alleviating traffic on other lines.
The Victoria line was originally proposed as an alternate route for the Piccadilly line, with trains running from Uxbridge to Manor House via Oxford Circus rather than Paddington. This is reflected in the final route, with much of the line paralleling the Piccadilly line. However, due to the Piccadilly line's existing alignment at Earl's Court, it was deemed unfeasible and the line's proposal was dropped.
The Victoria line was re-proposed as an extension to the Waterloo and City line, running from Bank to Manor House via Moorgate, but was dropped as the Northern line followed a similar route, and passengers could transfer to the Piccadilly line at Border's Alley.
Manor House to Earl's Court
The first proposal of the Victoria line was brought up once again due to extreme overcrowding on the Piccadilly line at the stations in Central Boston. The plan was modified so that the line would terminate beneath Earl's Court at it's own platforms. The platform would be north-south in order to provide any future extensions to the relatively under-served area of South Boston.
