Contest chronology

The MRTvision Screenshot Contest 8 is the eighth edition of the MRTvision Screenshot Contest. The contest is a server-wide screenshot competition with Eurovision-style voting and representation.

The ceremony took place in Covina, following _Kastle's win at the seventh contest with the screenshot "Like a Shooting Star, I Will Go the Distance". The contest debuted with a soft opening on February 25, 2021, and an official opening on February 27, 2021. The contest's slogan was "Paint The World". The winner was revealed on March 27, 2021, at 8 p.m. UTC at the Covina Ellipse Theater without a live audience. There was an MBS prerecorded broadcast for both the semi-final and final ceremonies instead of the normal ceremonies due to scheduling conflicts.

This contest was the first MRTvision Screenshot Contest to not hold a live event to reveal the results and the first to be held after Modgate.

39 cities participated in the contest. The winner was Wazamawazi with the screenshot "Before Closing", taken by autobus22. With this win, autobus22 became the third person to win the MRTvision Screenshot Contest two times.

Production

The contest was first teased on February 14, 2021, by MinecraftYoshi26 posting "screenshot contest soon? 👍 or 👎" in the #event-announcements channel in the MRT Discord. The message garnered 31 thumbs up reactions from other members and the contest was confirmed on the MRT Wiki later that day. The host city was announced as Covina on February 18, 2021.

For the first time, the contest's semi-final ceremony was changed from a live broadcast with a live audience to a private, pre-recorded prerecorded broadcast.

The non-qualifiers' placements and point totals in the semi-finals were released on March 25, 2021, following voting being completed for the final.

Venue

The venue of the contest, the Covina Ellipse Theater, underneath a train station in northern Covina

The contest's results ceremonies took place for the first time in Covina, following Covina's victory in the previous edition with the screenshot "Like a Shooting Star, I Will Go the Distance", taken by _Kastle. The host venue was announced on February 27, 2021.

The contest took place at Covina's 270-seat theater, the Covina Ellipse Theater, which was renovated in 2021 for the contest. The theater had no official name until the renovations were complete for the contest by MinecraftYoshi26. The entrance to the theater is located inside a train station, which was originally constructed in Wampanoag by bryce_am. To get to the entrance from the station, an underground tunnel was created to give access to the theater from the train station platform. Located on the north side of the town, it is the only venue of its kind in Covina. The closest transit to the theater is the RaiLinQ and Fred Rail trains at the stations outside of the entrance. ATC-1 is also right outside of the station.

Visual design

The contest's slogan and logo were announced on February 24, 2021. The contest's logo is an original work created by RacCort, designed by MinecraftYoshi26. The logo was made with a focus on using a paint-like style in mind.

Format

Similarly to the previous contests, the contest featured members representing cities, each submitting a screenshot to be voted on by the participants and the willing public. Each city and willing non-participants award a set of 12, 10, 8–1 points to their 10 favorite screenshots, respectively. Each participant is required to vote. Failing to vote or voting strategically can result in the participant facing disqualification or a possible ban from participating in future contests. Similarly to most of the previous contests, there was no theme.

The deadline to join was announced as March 7, 2021. The deadline to send in a screenshot was announced as March 20, 2021. After the semi-final ceremony, the draw order was selected for the final, and voting opened for the final near the end of the ceremony. The winner is able to influence the slogan for the next contest, choose the next host city, and receive $3,000. Second place received $2,000. Third place received $1,000. All competitors received $15 as a participatory stipend for voting. The top 10 were featured on the MRT website.

Semi-final allocation draw

On February 27, 2021, it was confirmed that there would be two semi-finals. As the prior winner, Covina would automatically qualify for the final and vote in both semi-finals. The top 10 screenshots from each semi-final advance to the final.

For the fourth time, there were pots created for semi-final allocation drawings. The 44 semi-finalists were allocated into 7 pots, based on aggregate rankings by participant, not by city, from prior contest data. Drawing from different pots helps to reduce the chance of lopsided semi-finals by predicted placement from prior contests. The semi-final allocations were made on March 7, 2021. Covina's draw number for the final was also selected.

Cypress, Spruce Valley, and Wenyanga were originally allocated to participate in the first semi-final but withdrew.

• Arcadia – On February 12, 2021, lil_shadow59 transferred Arcadia to MC_Protocol. On March 4, 2021, MC_Protocol officially declared his participation under Redwood. Thus, there was no representative for Arcadia. Arcadia last participated in the seventh contest.
• East Mesa – On February 26, 2021, 0x10 noted that he was not planning to participate after being asked. East Mesa last participated in the seventh contest.
• Hendon – On March 7, 2021, LondonThameslink officially declared participation; however, on March 10, 2021, he stated that he was withdrawing as his computer did not support shaders and had a lack of time to participate. Hendon was allocated to semi-final 2. Hendon last participated in the seventh contest.
• Moramoa – On March 2, 2021, megascatterbomb stated that he was not planning to participate due to a lack of free time. Moramoa last participated in the seventh contest.
• Oparia – On February 25, 2021, kyyl_ officially declared his participation under Encinitas. Thus, there was no representative for Oparia. Oparia last participated in the seventh contest.
• Pixl – On March 7, 2021, Seshpenguin officially declared participation; however, on March 12, 2021, when asked about submitting a screenshot, he withdrew. Pixl was allocated to semi-final 2. Pixl last participated in the seventh contest.
• Richville – On October 11, 2020, woorich999 was banned and transferred Richville to Cookie46910. On February 25, 2021, Cookie46910 officially declared his participation under Peripotamia. Thus, there was no representative for Richville. Richville last participated in the seventh contest.
• Segville – On February 26, 2021, godzilltrain noted that he was not planning to participate after being asked. Segville last participated in the seventh contest.
• Spruce Valley – On February 25, 2021, Johngi officially declared participation; however, on March 11, 2021, he withdrew. Spruce Valley was allocated to semi-final 1. Spruce Valley last participated in the seventh contest.
