New Singapore is a community town and former capital of Nansei-Gunto before its dissolution. It is currently the capital of the Republic of New Singapore.
Etymology
New Singapore is named after the real-life country of Singapore, one of the most famous nations on the MRT simply because of how its playerbase has influenced so much on the MRT.
The city was named so after confusion between mi_aquamarine and Airplaneguy9, when mi_aquamarine said NSG (NanSei-Gunto), which Airplaneguy9 took to be New Singapore (inside joke referring to how the Region of Lumeva was going to one day take over Singapore and name it Lumeva). After he started using the New Singapore name for the city, everyone present thought the name of the city was New Singapore. As a result, the name 'New Singapore' stuck as the name for the city.
Other colloquial names include Community Town, Mojangland (for its Mojangitis) and New Hong Kong (skyscrapers everywhere).
History
Before New Singapore
For context, this is what Nansei-Gunto was before May 12. Back then, the Epsilonian Republic province of Nansei-Gunto, founded on 24 April 2020, was only four towns and four members strong. Wenyanga was Airplaneguy9's town on the coast of the mainland that had reached Councillor and then stopped growing, Shahai was a small town by Weier on a south island that was slowly but steadily growing, Kazeshima, the largest of the four and i____7d's town, was growing at an alarming rate and itched for expansion, and Shenghua was owned by mi_aquamarine and at the time was memed greatly for its lack of infrastructure. It was also the capital of Nansei-Gunto, as it had been capital to Nansei-Gunto's predecessor, the Autonomous Republic of Shenghua. As such, mi_aquamarine was the Governor of the region.
The Airfield Conflict - Grief Island
On May 12, 2020, planning for the future, i____7d decided to pick an island around 900 blocks southeast of Wenyanga for his Senator airfield. i____7d had a habit of doing two things with Kazeshima: 1. building external transport far from Kazeshima's mainland (as seen with Kazeshima Ferry Terminal) and 2. taking over islands and declaring them part of Kazeshima. And now, there was a problem: the island he wanted was closer to Wenyanga than to Kazeshima, which meant that he had to sought permission from Airplaneguy9 to take the island.
This wasn't the first time there had been conflict with Kazeshima's island claiming - it had tried to take the land north (eventually shared with Shenghua), south (half the island south was split between Kazeshima and Shahai) and west (Airplaneguy9 told 7d to not take the island in case someone else wanted to start a town there).
i____7d announced his plans to Airplaneguy9, and he said that he had claimed the island. Airplaneguy9 refused, and decided to teach him a lesson by claiming the island himself (i____7d had claimed the island via Discord). He planted the Nansei-Gunto flag, built barbed wire around the island, and put a huge red cross on the island, declaring it a Wenyangan military nuclear testing site and naming it Macece Island. i____7d was not pleased, and went to the island himself to take it back. Airplaneguy9 asked PeacemakerX5 to help him drive i____7d away, but all Peace did was declare the island as Peacopolis property and an UwU zone. mi_aquamarine declared it Shenghuan, Seshpenguin part of Pixl, Fiork part of Marisol - at that point over half the players online were participating in griefing the entire island. Half an hour later, Macece - or Grief - Island was a complete mess of wacky art designs and other things.
All involved agreed to rollback the island after two days.
The Founding of New Singapore
But then, Airplaneguy9, seeing how the most of server had joined the Grief Island mess, suggested a community town they could build together. This went over everyone else as a 'that could work'. Determined to test if it could work, Airplaneguy9 sent Yellowitcher to scout an area to start building. Yellow found one within 5 minutes of scouting. While everyone was still griefing Grief Island, Airplaneguy9 and Seshpenguin teleported to Yellow.
At precisely 14:41 GMT on May 13, 2020, Yellowitcher placed down a black concrete block, thus founding New Singapore.
The first thing built in New Singapore is what is now known as Franchise Road, named for its numerous stalls on the side of the road. Also along this road, ktkren777, mi_aquamarine and Airplaneguy9 built a promenade, while _jamess started work on a port just south of the promenade. Seshpenguin placed a banner stating that the Government of Pixl was funding the infrastructure of New Singapore. This spawned a bunch of copies by many other towns:

As time progressed, people started building more things. Some people were planning out roads, some metros, some stations, and some skyscrapers. The first skyscraper to be built was the Pixl Global Affairs Tower, built by Seshpenguin. At 81 meters tall, it doesn't reach some taller skyscrapers, but it can stand out as one of the tallest in the area. This started a huge skyscraper rush, as people started using more and more space leaving no space for smaller builds, meaning the only option was up. A competition soon began to see who could build the tallest skyscraper. The first skyscraper to break 100m was Seshpenguin's Clios Condos, which was 107m tall, then the next tallest was Airplaneguy9's Dept. of Aviation headquarters, coming in at a narrow 113m. But that did not compare to the next tallest building. Built by Weier and TheSubway, the next tallest building in New Singapore was the 27-floor Housing and Development Tower, at a whopping 186m, almost an entire skyscraper higher than the previous tower. This made it the second tallest building in Nansei-Gunto at the time* (i____7d's Epsilia HQ in Kazeshima comes in at 190m).
Finally, Airplaneguy9 took back the title two days later with the Lecture Tower expansion, bringing it to 192m tall, and the tallest building in Nansei-Gunto. The expansion is over 100m taller than the original building.
*A metro station is under the HDB Tower, and a mall is being constructed as well. If you include the basement when measuring height, then the HDB Tower would still be considered as the tallest building in New Singapore
Building Boom
A huge building boom ensured by almost 30 people over the next 24 hours after the town was built, leading to the town becoming Councillor-size very quickly. Departments were established very quickly, but everyone involved at the time knew that the Housing and Development Board, or the HDB, which was led by Weier and TheSubway, held a monopoly over the town; their main building was the tallest in the city. Skyscrapers roamed the cityscape, and districts plus roads were quickly put down. The rapid expansion attracted more and more people, and soon earned the city the nickname New Hong Kong for just how many skyscrapers there were. Among the skyscrapers were the beginnings of a town hall, a Hindu temple, and a beach-house that served as the HQ of the Director of Random Helping.
However, many saw how the city was beginning to take up more and more of the island's space. They had already built over half the island in just 24 hours. And so, the city turned to land reclaiming. The first blocks of wool for reclaiming land were placed on May 13, and the first worldedit happened an hour later. By May 15, around 25% of land was reclaimed, with 40% of new land from wool-marked spots that had not been worldedited with land yet. Plots were starting to be taken fast, and there was almost no space left to build. The solution was defined in Airplaneguy9's Emergency Protocol Seven (read Geography and Topology below). This was acted out upon in put into place effective May 14, 2020, and Weier and Yellowitcher began construction on a bridge to the snowy mainland, just 200 blocks away.
Other notable constructions included a metro system, an embassy tower and the Marina Bay Sands hotel.
The Fireworks Show
On May 14, at around 18:15 GMT, Airplaneguy9 decided to host a fireworks show. Recorded by mi_aquamarine, the show was a success, and those involved included Weier, MPolo455, Seshpenguin, Yellowitcher and fork_07. The show was held to commemorate 24 hours of the existence of the city, plus the huge success it got, those involved, and for the future of the town.
There are plans for another show to be held when a mayor is elected. While this show was small, the next one would be 'even larger', according to Airplaneguy9.
Pulau Sentosa
On May 16, HarborRandom852, seeing that there was very little space to build anything, decided to build an artificial island off the coast of New Singapore called Pulau Sentosa. This island was quite large, and would have boosted the available land by up to 20%. However, when asking staff to fill in the island, staff refused. Eventually, with the community split into two sides over whether the island should stay or go, he abruptly cancelled the project, ending the dispute.
Weapon of mass destruction
On May 15, 2020 local time, unconfirmed reports were circulated among the embassies in Ottawa that an unknown entity has successfully managed to produce a nuclear weapon, after an unknown tipper had informed several embassies surrounding the issue. It is also unknown of whether of how of the unknown entity has gained of such material to perform of such, or whether if the entity was a state actor or a terrorist organisation. It was also unknown of how long the procurement, development and manufacturing process has been undertaken by the unknown entity. It is also further suggested that the nuclear weapon is also built by a "third-party contractor" and not by a state or organisation.
After a global search and surveillance throughout the globe, on May 16, 2020, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom had released a press statement, identifying the unknown entity as Nansei-Gunto, a virtual state vested within a a Minecraft server hosted from Montreal, Canada. It identifies the nuclear weapon are loaded upon on an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile with a 5-megaton payload and has a range of 7500km (4660 miles). It was further noted that the missile is currently stored in a "high-density area" within New Singapore, the capital of Nansei-Gunto, but claims that the missile has the capability to "launch despite the given geographical and environmental concerns" without alluding further details. The United Kingdom then notified the United Nations Security Council. At the time, it was unknown if New Singapore and Nansei-Gunto produced the weapons themselves or had sought to contract the manufacturing and production to a third-party entity or corporation, nor was there any knowledge whether if Nansei-Gunto or New Singapore has uranium enrichment facilities or capabilities.
It is unknown of how a virtual Minecraft town has gained of such capabilities, but nevertheless the Secretary-General has issued an notice informing the 15-member nations body of an emergency meeting which is to be held within the next 24 hours in New York under the request of several member nations, including United Kingdom. Despite the COVID-19 Pandemic, all delegates from the 15 member nations were present when the Security Council convened on May 17.
The result of the emergency meeting concluded with resolution S/RES/2519. The resolution passed 15-0-0, with no abstentions or vetos. The resolution condemns the state of Nansei-Gunto and the city of New Singapore for the possessions of weapons of mass destruction. Within the resolution, it also enacts the UNSC to be empowered to place economic sanctions upon Nansei-Gunto and in extension, New Singapore, if deemed necessary by the Security Council, should there be no action or any aggressive actions taken upon the entity with regards to the nuclear weapon in question.
The delegation of the United States has expressed the unnecessary need to invoke Article 42 as Kelly Craft, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, was quoted saying that "New Singapore and Nansei-Gunto as a whole, does not possess any strategic or valuable natural resources, such as petroleum, that would be deemed worthy to enact military action upon of such to retrieve and recover the [nuclear weapon]."
While no response has been heard from the Epsilonian Republic, the Nansei-Gunto Director of Foreign Affairs, Airplaneguy9, stated to the media on June 5, 2020:
"We [Nansei-Gunto] deny the existence of a nuclear missile underneath the capital New Singapore, and we indeed have no intention to build and use such a horrible creation. We urge those in our region to report those who have been spreading rumours and lies, and who threaten our reputation."
When asked about Macece Island, Airplaneguy9 stated the following:
"Macece Island is a private island jointly owned by the City of Wenyanga and the [Nansei-Gunto] Military, but rest assured, we do not have nuclear weapons at the site, and I would like to personally strike [down] those claims. There have been reports of a missile test on said island, and it is now understood these these claims are [also] false."
Finally, on July 1, Airplaneguy9 addressed the media again for New Singapore's 50-day speech:
"In relation [to the nuclear bomb], Mr Kurimi Naru(?), of Kazeshima, has been arrested by Kazeshima police on multiple counts of attempted murder and disturbing the peace. Mr Naru is set to appear at the Bahia High Court in Sunshine Coast, on July 18.
On July 14, after nearly two months, overshadowed by the Epsilonian crisis, the UN voted lifted sanctions on Nansei-Gunto.
The Mayoral Elections
Previous attempts
The mayoral elections were originally set to take place on May 20, 2020, one week after New Singapore's founding. This election would have been set out in the following way:
- Any player of the Senator rank and above would be allowed to run for, or be nominated to run for, mayor of New Singapore. This player should have strong leader characteristics, and should have a special connection to the city.
- Any player of the Councillor rank and above would be allowed to run for, or be nominated to run for, deputy mayor of New Singapore. This player should have a special connection to the city, and should be able to uphold important tasks, such as acting in-office if the mayor is banned/on leave.
Fan favourites for mayor included Yellowitcher and Frosty_Creeper10. Favourites for deputy included Weier, Airplaneguy9 and mi_aquamarine. However, the elections were indefinitely delayed as people started to lose interest in New Singapore. With no clear mayor as time went by, the elections were put off for later.
On July 16, Frosty won the mayoral elections for the Mayor of the Capital City of the Republic of Epsilon (MCCRE), prompting people to question about the status of the elections. It was first suggested that either the MCCRE be capital of New Singapore as well, or that Frosty and Yellowitcher set upon an agreement. Following inactivity from Yellowitcher and Frosty's indefinite ban from the server in mid-October, the election status was thrown into the air again.
The 2021 Elections
On January 8, 2021, Airplaneguy9 announced elections to be held that January and February.
"Holding New Singapore mayor elections again for the umpteenth time in the hope that people vote. Voting takes place on the Nansei-Gunto discord (in #auxiliary-discords) and between 15 and 31 January. The new Mayor will be announced on 5 February. Deputy Mayor elections will run between 6 and 16 February, with the new DM announced on 20 February. Candidates must DM myself with a short paragraph stating why they want to be the mayor or deputy mayor of New Singapore. It's really not that hard to do, alright? Candidates, please DM me by next week. I wish you all luck."
By January 15, the requirements for New Singapore mayor had dropped to Mayor, and two competitors emerged: HarbourRandom852 and MgWn. The elections started on January 16, and just two hours in, Harbour was taking the lead with 4 votes to 0. In 24 hours, Harbour was beating Mg with 10 votes to 2, and many predicted that Harbour was in for a landslide victory when the elections ended on January 31.
For Deputy Mayor, both Sasha9076 and Weier were running for the position. These elections became notorious before they even began, as Sasha was arrested by police in a New Singapore hotel in the evening of January 8 for reasons currently unknown. It is thought that she bribed an official, but Sasha denies these claims strongly, saying she was bribed herself not to tell why she was arrested. Despite the arrest, Sasha was allowed to keep running. Both Airplaneguy9 and frogggggg announced their run on January 22, shortly after both had attended the first sitting of the Hut Kong Commision at New Singapore High Court, a commission into the actions at Hut Kong on July 23, 2020. There were some players expected to run who didn't, such as mi_aquamarine (he denied wanting to run for mayor). Hightech_TR stated on B!news that he wanted to run, but decided at the end not to.
The Deputy Mayor elections started on February 1, 2021. As of February 17th, frogggggg has won the election with 9 votes.
Results
The Mayor results were uploaded on February 1. It was shown that, as predicted, Harbor won the Mayoral election at 13-1. He was inaugurated on February 5th.
Independence
Following the dissolution of Nansei Gunto, the city as well as the neighboring island of St. Helena as well as its associated islands became a new state known as the Republic of New Singapore. The new country declared open borders with both the newly independent Shenghua and Lumeva. However, the country remains resistant against Lumevan expansionism into New Singapore.
Transport
Intra-city transit
Initial proportions for transit within the city was roughly planned, with a line running north-south of the island-state and an east-west line running from the port to the east of the city, complemented with a circle line looping the southern island. While the construction and operation of the metro was directly tendered towards LimeTransit and FLR Corporation, propositions from foreign companies, National Transportation and Connected NSG (previously known as Bluebus), had proposed to plan, construct and operate tram and bus routes separately.
With several disputes that followed upon, with proposals that National Transportation shall operate 25% of the bus routes within the city, it was agreed that LimeTransit and FLR Corporation shall be solely operating metros, National Transport to operate the trams, and Connected NSG to operate the bus routes within the city.
All public transport within the city are regulated by Land Transport Authority, a centralized authority under the municipal government of New Singapore. It operates under the branding go.nsg.
Sea
The Port of New Singapore, originally built by jamess__, lay unfinished for two months until Needn_NL and Airplaneguy9 started construction on it on July 17. The port hopes to be a major trading and tourist hub for Nansei-Gunto, with services to the rest of the world.
Geography
Land
New Singapore sits on a tiny island, which is not very big, and can barely support the town. As space runs out, the city has turned to land reclaiming. It is estimated that over 30% of the land is reclaimed or worldedited. Emergency Protocol Seven allocates emergency funds to the building of a bridge to the icy mainland, to facilitate growth for the city. Although this was supposed to be a last resort, construction on a bridge has started.
