Lore

Early History

Woodburn was originally incorporated by Dutch farmers in the mid 1800s. Before the Dutch came the the area that is now Woodburn, a smaller town was near Lake Streandale called Korany, owned by the natives in the area. The natives taught the farmers how to farm in the cold environment, and other survival techniques. The farmers began farming fruits and vegetables native to the area, including mostly sweetberries in the winter and potatoes, wheat, and beans in the summer. The pioneers built their own town across the lake from Korany, and called it Houtverbranding, which roughly translates to Woodburn in Dutch.

Red River Blizzard

In 1878, a catastrophic blizzard blew through the area. The farmers were somewhat used to blizzards, but this blizzard was much stronger than every other blizzard they had encountered. Red River Blizzard, named after the Red River, destroyed most of Houtverbranding, and some of the farmers died or went missing after the storm. The town eventually rebuilt itself, and recovered from the blizzard. The new buildings were much stronger than the old wooden cottages, since they got bricks and cobblestone from Willow.

The Population Boom of 1922

In 1922, several years after World War 1, the town had a sudden population boom when new farming technology was made to make farming easier. The town had grown very close to Korany, and decided to merge the towns together. With Houtverbrandings growing population and size overall, they decided to start creating trade routes to Willow. Houtverbranding was also renamed to Woodburn in this era aswell.

Industry, Tourism, and Farming in Woodburn

In the 40s, Woodburn began to build factories at a much more rapid pace to keep up with the industrial demand, and to help supply ammunition and clothes during World War 2. Factories and business would eventually become a large factor of Woodburns economy, with many companies making factories and offices in the area after World War 2. Several companies were established and or made headquarters or regional offices in the city. Tourism also increased in the 60s and 70s when Southern Beach was incorporated, and also due to the many cultures in the city, mainly Dutch, Polish, and Inuit. Many museums were built for the various arts and cultures in the city. To deal with the growing population, many hydroponic and greenhouse farms were created, along with traditional farms, so that they could grow food in the cold environment.
