Under the edit box, there lies a minor edit checkbox. A check in that box tells everyone else that your edit has no noticeable difference or impact. Minor edits are believed to not require any sort of review, and would never be the origin of any edit war or dispute. This is why minor edits are usually noted only in cases such as correcting spelling, adding links, or other formatting changes.

If you change even a single word in the article, for instance removing the word "not" or replacing "and" with "or", you should mark the edit as major, meaning you leave the box unchecked. This way, other editors know that your edit should be reviewed.

A good rule of thumb is: If you're fixing spelling or turning some text into a link, mark it minor. If in doubt, leave the box unchecked!
