The 2016 City-State of Kitania Independence Referendum is a future referendum, to be held between July 16th and July 20th, which will decide whether or not the City-State of Kitania will secede from the MRT server.

The referendum was first commissioned by the 5th Congress of the City-State of Kitania under Act 16, the City-State of Kitania Independence Referendum Act. The date of the referendum was decided by the 6th Congress of the City-State of Kitania under Act 19, the Independence Referendum Finalization Act.

All citizens of the City-State of Kitania will be able to vote in the referendum for their Congressional District. Voters will vote by Congressional District, and each Congressional District will then vote either to secede or remain.

The referendum will be facilitated by the Kitania Election Commission.

Background

The referendum was conceptualized in June 2016, when an independence movement emerged in the City-State of Kitania to secede from the MRT. Through campaigning and gaining the support of citizens, Congress agreed to pass legislation allowing a referendum to settle the question of secession.

Reasons

The pro-independence movement cited overregulation by the MRT government as a primary reason to secede. Developers argued that the MRT's regulation of what they could and could not build was unjust. Political activists protested the lack of democracy in the MRT government, a contrast to the democratic nature of the City-State of Kitania. Bulldozing company executives were frustrated with regulations regarding protection of natural land. Pro-slavery activists criticized the illegalization of slavery as tyrannical.

Criticism & Opposition

Many groups and citizens have expressed desire to remain part of the MRT, and have criticized the idea of a referendum to secede. Diplomats expressed concern over diplomatic ties with other states of the MRT. Business owners were opposed to cutting ties with their primary trading partners. Congressman Skelezomperman stated, "So why is this acceptable?". Vice President MinecraftYoshi26 wrote, "{{quality|1}}"

How It Will Work

The referendum will occur between July 16th and July 20th. Voters may vote on the referendum within this time frame.

On the day of the referendum, voters in each Congressional District will vote either to secede from the MRT or remain. The votes will be tallied for each Congressional District, and the side which wins a majority of Congressional Districts will win the referendum.
