RapidLink Metro is an urban rapid transit system serving the Sunshine Cove Metropolitan Region. It consists of three lines, including two heavy rail lines (the Red and Purple lines) and one light rail line (the Green line). The system connects with RapidLink buses and the SunRail commuter network.

Current System Overview

Lines

Line name Stations Termini Type
Red Line 4 (Planned: 8) Waterside Station
Yorkdale
Heavy Rail
Purple Line 4 (Planned: 8) Waterside Station
Bridgeport
Heavy Rail
Green Line 3 (Planned: 10) TBD Light Rail

The Red and Purple lines follow a fully grade seperated route. The Green line runs in a mix of environments, including at-grade, street running, elevated, and buried.

The Red and Purple lines share tracks between Waterside Station and Hope/CMU station. The Green Line operates multiple branches that converge in the main corridor.

Stations

The large majority of heavy rail stations are either underground or at ground level, with some elevated stations. Most of the light rail stations are at ground level with some buried stations.

Stations include at least two ticket vending machines, electronic message displays, and wayfinding signage.

Stations on the Red and Purple lines are staffed during regular hours but Green line stations are not staffed during regular hours.

The Red and Purple lines use a closed fare system with fare gates at all heavy rail stations. The Green line uses a proof-of-payment system with fare inspectors randomly inspecting trains and stations to ensure that passengers have a valid proof of payment.

Some suburban stations have paid park and ride lots available for passengers to use.

Rolling Stock

RapidLink Metro maintains two distinct rail systems: a heavy rail system and a light rail system. They are incompatible with each other. The heavy rail system is powered by third rail while the light rail system is powered by overhead catenary. Both systems have similar car widths.

The light rail system uses a modified version of the NewRich CityScape LRV vehicle.

The heavy rail system uses custom made vehicles manufactured by NewRich Vehicles. The system has two types of train sets, the Type I and the Type II. The Type I vehicles normally run in one to two car trains. After the Purple Line extension was built, RapidLink ordered new Type II vehicles from NewRich Vehicles, these were manufactured in their Richville factory. The trains are similar to those that are used on ART in Antioch. Type II trains are permanently joined together in three car configurations. Type II trains have a streamlined front and rear, and articulated joints allowing passengers to walk the entire length of the train. RapidLink has placed a bid for NewRich Vehicles to manufacture 30 new Type III trains to replace the aging Type I trains. There is currently one Type III test train in the North Cove yard.
