The #announcements channel in August 2023

The MRT Discord, or the MRT Discord server, is a Discord server created on Discord, an instant messaging and VoIP social platform.

History

The MRT Discord server was established in January 2016. Two people, Omricon and Cynra_, helped set up the server, being given a now-defunct special "Omrifish" role for their efforts.

After the MRT Discord server was established, many members of the community were torn between using Mumble and Discord. At the February 2016 GSM, the "Mumble vs Discord" divide was discussed, where it was decided that both would be kept for the foreseeable future, with GSMs and major events still taking place in Mumble, however both GSMs and Events were later hosted on Discord.

Later, in the November 2016 GSM, the "Mumble vs Discord" divide was discussed again, with the verdict being that the MRT server will move away from Mumble, instead focusing on Discord, with the December 2016 GSM being held on Discord. In February 27, 2017, a channel called #staff-emergency were made for urgent issues that need staff. This later became #requests-to-staff in August 2019, and was converted to a forum channel in ...

In December 17, 2017, 3 new channels were introduced, #planning, #irl-news and #science.

In March 5, 2018, in midst of Mercury203 attacks, a new channel, #new-members was introduced, which new members can only see until given the "Member" role by staff, @everyone pings were restricted to staff only, and members are now able to post images and links in any channel; previously, it was restricted to select channels. Additionally, a new channel was added: #creative.

In May 9, 2018, a new channel, #minecraft-server was added, linked to the Minecraft server via the DiscordSRV plugin. It was originally tested in July 2017, but was not installed on the main server because Frumple said it didn't have any "benefit in cross-communication between the MC server and Discord", and stated that DiscordSRV had issues such as showing vanished staff joins/leaves, and whether to use global chat or a new channel linked to Discord. Initially, it was only linked to the [Discord] channel, which members could use with /d. Everyone could use @everyone to ping everyone in the Discord server due to an oversight in permissions until it was fixed in May 14 when 3 people used @everyone. The day after, chiefbozx called the last day's events "@everyone-o-rama" when megascatterbomb asked him to name it. In August 13, 2018, the global chat is now linked to Discord, with the [Discord] channel in Minecraft server being discounted.

In October 1, 2018, the project channels were linked to the Minecraft server, after a decision on September 2018 GSM.

In November 6, 2018, TacoBot was introduced, along with a new channel with it, as discussed in November 2018 GSM. Also in the same GSM, the #information channel was created to store information about MRT resources.

In January 2019 GSM, the use of @everyone is now expanded, with people being able to request such pings for events.

In April 15, 2019, a #notifications channel was created.

In May 26, 2019, a #food channel was created by request of time2makemymove.

In June 2019 GSM, a #mature channel was added, being marked as a NSFW channel, along with another channel called #request-access-to-mature used to request access. In August 2019, #mature was renamed to #serious and requesting access is now not required, with #request-access-to-mature being removed. Additionally, emojis for MRT staff members were added.

In March 5, 2023, linking your Minecart account to Discord became available, after 2 tests were conducted earlier, where LondonThameslink and Zuoj participated in, but it was not implemented due to how the ranks were structured at this time.

In the June 2023 ASM, plans were announced to open the Discord to Guests. On August 30, 2023, SimonScholar made a post in #community-issues, showcasing a conceptual template discord for what the MRT Discord server would look like if it were to be opened to guests. It was discussed on September 2023 GSM, where it was decided that the Discord will open to guests during the Delta migration, who will have access to select channels.

In September 24, 2023, the Discord server was reorganized to prepare for the opening during Delta migration, with channels being now categorized to Open Channels, Members, Community and IRL channels.

In November 11, 2023, the Discord server officially opened to the public, with guests being allowed to use /link, the /discord command being updated and a new Discord widget was added to the website. For a brief time when guests was able to use /link, all people who linked who was on the server was given the Guest role. It was formally announced in November 2023 GSM.

The channels beginning with nomination- were channels used to discussing moderator candidates, as implemented with the new mod nomination process in October 2020 GSM. This was discounted in the February 2021 GSM due to problems about the purpose of these channels, which was intended to provide evidence that is relevant to the moderator criteria, being moved to email only for future GSMs.

The channels beginning with review- were channels for submitting feedback about current staff members at this time. After the conclusion of October 2020 GSM, a batch of staff members were reviewed each week.
