History

Watchfield - 2015 to 2017

The Watchfield town hall
An early render of Glass City with its futuristic towers looking over Glass Lake, the second largest lake within Serena.

Serena emerged as a result of joining a decentralised area consisting of of small town centres all founded by powerminer01 close to the  A7  Serena East and  A8  Serena West/Watchfield stations. The city grew from its initial town hall in northern Serena: Watchfield District and slowly expanded to the south and east in the pocket of untouched land between Xilia, Cornus and Radiance Square. Watchfield was founded on July 2nd 2015 and began as a joint project between town founder powerminer01 and the_blockmaster in the wake of a previous city building project on another private server. As time went on, powerminer01 became the dominant builder of the strip of town which grew southward along the {road|map|A8}} highway during that summer. The first iteration of a public transport system was designed by powerminer01 and consisted of single tram line which ran between  A8  Serena West/Watchfield and today's Prismarine Plaza.
Into 2016 and beyond, the small town started to slowly work itself towards the longtime non-claimed  A7  Serena East MRT station where later builds became upscaled in comparison to the more modest scaled buildings in the old town of Watchfield. Carried by a vision to create a more city-like atmosphere, this new eastern territory became the cradle of what today is Serena Republica. Development however, was continuously slow and much of that vision would not be realised until the year 2020.
The first of the eastern parts of the new city to appear was what today is called Glass City, a region which to this day still sticks out as an experiment in futuristic architecture. Glass City became the first thematically coherent area of the city and came to be a model for the way future districts would be stylistically oriented.

Watchfield's first wave of renewal - 2017 to 2018

Innovation Square is one of the clearest examples on how the old trackbed was reused as a bus route, retaining many of the old stations.
An early render of Prismarine Plaza, highlighting the residential complext which stood finished in mid 2017

After a nearly yearlong hiatus from the server, powmeriner01 returned to the project in the spring of 2017. and continued the experimentation further. This time, the largely untouched part of southern Watchfield, which since late 2015 had mostly consisted of empty roads. This site became the grounds for a radical deviation from what could be considered a standard for Watchfield architecture, a project which became known as Prismarine Plaza. This interconnected multi-building complex became an experiment in mixed use zoning, combining commercial spaces offices and housing into a dynamic building intended to blend in with the surrounding nature. Prismarine Plaza is to this day a one-of a kind building which is a prime example of the new post-Watchfield style.

2017 became a year of renewal for the town. The tram system which had been in service since the summer of 2015 had since beginning been suffering due to a fatal design flaw. autobus22 remarked on this in 2017 and offered to improve the town's public transport and replaced the tram line with a bus network, making Watchfield a part of the Xilia Regional Buses network.

Watchfield's second Wave of renewal - 2018 to 2019

This particular period in the city's history didn't sport much visible activity until nearly the end of 2019. Longtime plans to develop a new downtown in between the two MRT stations on the Arctic Line covering the largely unexploited territory. Since august 2019 work had been put into developing a technology to power the future metro system indended to run beneath the streets of Watchfield. The platforms operated by Acacia Transit Systems stood finished after the 2020 new year's and began to be constructed around the city. In early Febuary of 2020 the two stations named "Serena West / Watchfield" and "Glass City" layed out the humble first stretch of what today is the Circle Line marked in yellow on the metro map. This implementation of a metro system, in many ways resembling the tram which ran overground on the streets which the circle line runs below today.

An early plan for the future metro system

The beginnings of Serena - 2019 to 2020

An early version of the Serena Metro Map
An early metro map of the Serena Metro System
An early plan for the Serena downtown area remained largely unchanged as the area sprung up in 2020. Note the orange and green lines detailing what today is Republica Avenue and Republica Mall.

A part of the longtime vision of the project involved making the now much larger town feel more like a city. The town had changed a lot since its founding in 2015 and the old Watchfield town hall no longer was a building which mirrored the vast development. In an effort to partially rebrand the town for the future, mayor powerminer01 decided to change its name to Serena in september of 2019. Along with this name change, the first plans for a future metro system to bring all the parts together was concieved.

Serena into the future - 2020 to 2021

2020 is to be regarded as the most dramatic year for Serena in terms of scale and development. Beginning in March 2020, the downtown of Serena Republica stood finished before the end of the year, and has since late 2020 been the official home of the city's administration. Most of the work however, was done underground as large parts of the long awaited metro system was finished and continues to be expanded upon to this day.

Districts

Serena Republica Near completion
Serena Evergreen Under development
Glass City Under development

Serena West, named Watchfield is the oldest part of the city, and the location of the old town hall. Watchfield got its name from the geographical features of the nearby area. Watch as in view and field describing the plain grasslands on which the town is built.

Serena East nicknamed Serena Academica from its geograpical vicinity to the Serena University and the amount of university-adjescent institutions and fraternaties which can be found there. Much like its sister district to the west across Republica Park, Serena Academica sports a largely classical architectural style and stretches between the northerne edge of the university campus grounds, and Serena East station.

Serena Republica is the beating heart of Serena City, being the location of the new Serena City Hall, Serena Republica Theatre, Serena Public Library, Republica Mall and Campus Piron, headquarters of Piron Incorporated and all its companies. The name 'Serena Republica' stems from the so-called "Most Serene Republic of Venice" during the Reneissance in Europe, reflecting order and serenity.

Serena South named Evergreen by account of its nature, is the southernmost district of Serena. Evergreen is by far the most expansive of the five districts, and houses a variety of different institutions and mixed residential- and commercial areas. It is the future grounds for Serena University and it's "Serena Inventia" campus grounds at the southern edge of Serena Academica.

Serena North nicknamed Glass City surrounds a small lake and sticks out with its coherently futuristic architectural style. Glass city is a largely commercial area with hotels and restaurants, notably being home to the first Marin Hotels building on the MRT Server. Glass City houses the municipal building of Glass Meadows, a quiet suburban neighborhood across the lake.

Geography

South, the great taiga halts the city's current expansion.

Expansion

The Watchfield flag

Etmythology

Between the 2nd of July 2015 and the 29th of September 2019, the initial town name was Watchfield. Watchfield is today a ward of the larger Serena city. The name Serena stems from mayor powerminer01's interest in Canadian indie music. The name is derived from the experimental Toronto based rock group The Most Serene Republic. References to an intest in music can be found in Watchfield where an outdoor stage was built in late 2015. The initial plan for Watchfield was to have street names inspired by varoius artists and songs. As Watchfield eventually grew to become Serena, streets instead were named with the local geography and architecture in mind, aswell as sister cities, as in the case of Lanatam Avenue in Southern Serena Republica.

The Serena Flag was initially designed as the Watchfield flag in 2015. The flag was inspired by the large cross-design of nearby Premier city Whitechapel. The orange flower of the Watchfield flag became a signature for the new Serena flag and the flags of the subsequent wards. The Serena flag tricolour of light blue, yellow and white, symbolise the purity and serenity of the city aswell as hinting to the Swedish nationality of founder and mayor User:Powerminer01.

The ward flags of Glass City, Serena Academica and Serena Suburbia use the orange flower on a background reflecting the geography or function of their respective wards
