Pixl Island International Airport (PXA) is Pixl's governor airport, located north of the City of Dorval, on Pixl Island's east end. It primarily serves Pixl, Xandar-Vekta, and Espil's Cephyl district. It is one of two airports serving Pixl, the other being Pixl Vinayaka City Airfield.
It is equipped with 16 large passenger aircraft gates, 20 small aircraft gates, and a large transit terminal.
History
Pixl's earliest governor airport plans date back to mid-2020, where the 'Estify International Airport' project was conceived. Originally this airport was to be a joint project between Espil and Pixl, and would have been built in Pixl's Halton desert region (east of the Iakuse River). Part of the rationale behind a joint airport was that Pixl had not yet reached the Governor rank, and so land allocation shared between both Espil and Pixl would have allowed a large airport to be built to serve the north of the Estify Region.
By the time Pixl had reached the Governor rank, however, the Estify airport project had not yet materialized. Additionally, there had been many changes that put the future of the airport project in question, both geographic and within government. Major geographical work had taken place creating the Estify River (and thus forming Pixl Island), and 'The Hole' National Park, the latter of which is situated nearly directly on the Estify International Airport Land claim. Within the government, there was mounting pressure both internally and from the public on multiple fronts. After reaching Governor the airport project quickly reached top priority for the government, as the existing Pixl Vinayaka City Airfield was running at over capacity and considered to be holding back Pixl's potential growth. There was also pressure to ensure that a future airport serving Pixl would be uniquely sovereign, and not viewed as simply a second Espil airport serving Pixl.
For those reasons, on July 15 2023, the Government of Pixl announced the plans for a new airport named 'Pixl Island International Airport', which would be located on the northeast of the Pixl Island landmass.
On April 6, 2024, Pixl Island International Airport officially opened to passenger traffic with the first few commercial flights commencing that day.
On April 15, 2024, the first expansion of the airport opened. Home to the C Gates, the In-Field Concourse (IFC) was built as a physically separate building from the main terminal, being linked by a shuttle bus service.
Etymology
After the Estify River project was completed on the 9th of July 2023, the majority of Pixl's built up area resided on a newly formed island. As the Airport was being planned during the same time, it was named 'Pixl Island International Airport' in honour of this substantial change to Pixl's landscape. The airport code PXA is derived from Pixl Airport.
Transportation
The Airport complex is connected by TerminalLink, an underground light rail line with 4 stations:
- Long Term Parking
- Transit Terminal
- Terminal East - Gates
- Terminal West - Mini Jewel.
It is operated by Transport Pixl and uses the same technology as the Xandar-Vekta RT SkyTrain Line.
Pixl Island Airport is located on B752, with the B752A Airport Loop branch serving the departure and arrival levels.
